]]> http://iehoskins.com/2011/05/live-from-the-field/feed/ 0 ::a peek inside:: http://iehoskins.com/2010/11/a-peek-inside/ http://iehoskins.com/2010/11/a-peek-inside/#comments Mon, 22 Nov 2010 18:44:29 +0000 http://iehoskins.com/?p=2411 ….i {beth} have been in indiana for the last few days…my family needed some family portraits and engagment photos done… so here i am.  i am headed back down to indy in a few hours to catch a flt back to phx…  ugh, long travel day…anyway, i love coming home.  i love that when i step inside my parents front door time no longer exsists… now, to be honest, we are not the cleavers, we all have our faults and all have different struggles that we are dealing with as adults, but the beautiful thing about family is that it is about growing and changing and allowing for that to happen… i feel that it is all too often families love on condition, “i will love because you do this…..” or “i cant believe you did that, i dont agree with it…we are done”, i have been guilty of doing so, there has been more than one occasion that i have ‘disowned’ my family because their actions, or words havent gone over well with my ‘idea’ of what life should be like for  everyone… we are all very different people with very diffent life expeirences under our belts… i am learning this.  not just hearing it or saying it, but learning this…understanding…  over the past four years i have learned soemthin else, with  family there is room for error.  i never fully got that before. we as adult ‘children’ dont ever want to disappoint our parents, we dont want to embarass them with our words or actions, but sometimes it does happen…the working relationship between a parent and child is something that is ongoing, forever changing… i am finding as i get older how important it is to to drop the expectations of what you think you need to do or should do and live your life..not your family’s idea of life for you, but your life… and in the same measure it is equally important to allow for mistakes and crisis to happen, life is messy… we all need a safe place to call home, a place to come and hang our hats and sometimes our hearts…i have really been struggling with a lot in my own personal life the last three years that has really caused me to step back and take a good look at where i am at and where i would like to be…especially in the last 18 months or so i have found myself more withdrawn and unlike myself…i have felt like a joyless drone, going thru the motions, acting like someone i am not, living up to expecations that i have, to some extent, placed on myself… being completely honest with myself i dont want to go back to “what was”…i want to work toward “what could be”… i want to be able to reconnect with my family…not just over holidays and weekend trips, i want to be invested in them….for i know when my world completely shatters around me i can always come home and hang my hat…

…whew!! ok, that was a lot and a little heavy, sorry, needed to that off my chest!!… no matter what happens within the dynamics of my crazy lovable family, i always treasure the time spent with them….the laughter and fun memories will always outweigh the negs… as hannah says “wow, there has been this kind of self discovery in quite sometime”… love it!!
